INSPIRATION: ‘Homies’, Humanizing Portraits of Gang Members

Adam Amengual’s portraits of current and former gang members bear a striking resemblance to the 17th century Flemish portraiture the artist deeply admires. Each image commands our attention, and Amengual has removed all sense of shame we can only imagine that several of the subjects may grapple with. Instead he offers a way to honor each individual despite their troubled histories, allowing us to wonder about their pasts by gazing at scars, tattoos, and other brands — but without masking their humanity. As Adam puts it: ”A majority, if not everyone in this series has had a mug shot taken of them at one time in their past. I feel I have flipped that old image of them showing them as proud and iconic. It is a visual metaphor for the transformation they are bringing to their own lives.”

Homeboy Industries — a non-profit organization that helps gang members change their lives — assisted in Amengual’s portrait venture, which he calls Homies, and the results are beautiful. Visit more of Amengual’s stately images past the break. Read an interesting interview with the artist at Prison Photography.

IN STORE: Finders Keepers Spring 12

So what if it’s only January, we’ve got Spring on our minds! We just received our first ever order from Australian label Finders Keepers and are head over heels in lust. Because it’s not *officially* spring (although the pieces we received are from their Spring collection), I thought it was best to stay with a darker palette. As in black. And besides, what girl couldn’t use an updated version of the little black dress? Black is the new black, afterall. Check out the above pieces & more in store now.

LOOK AT THIS: Diego Gravinese’s Hyperreal Paintings

Ala Chuck Close, Diego Gravinese’s work is almost indecipherable from a photograph from a couple feet away. Gravinese lends much to the realism genre with his modern twist of super real surrealist oil and acrylic paintings on canvas – hand tweaked replicas of photographs curiously mundane and randomly curious all at once. Taking photo realism to an extreme, the Argentinian artist combines pop art elements with great technical skill to recreate imagery that boggles the mind.

INSPIRATION: Chanel Pre-Fall 2012 Paris – Bombay

You gotta hand it to the Kaiser, who else would put this much into a PRE-fall show? And I’m pretty sure the basis for inspiration was the princess in Never Ending Story… #justsayin. Though I’m just a dude and might not know the most about women’s, it seems like this is a pretty good infusion of newness. And he managed to sneak in a few men’s looks too :)

From Style.com:
Set in the Grand Palais in Paris, models walked a circular runway bordered by two lavishly set long banquets piled high with fruits, flowers, candelabras and there was even a silver toy train that delivered decanters of liquor to guests. In other words, it was fit for a king–or, in this case, a Raj.
The theme of the show was Bombay-meets-Paris and the clothing was a perfect blend of the two cities–think classic Chanel tweed jackets with Nehru collars and done up in neon pink; metallic evening gowns cut to look like saris; and classic French silhouettes pared with elaborate traditional Indian jewelry.
The exquisite collection is quite a feat considering Lagerfeld has never actually been to India. “It’s much more inspiring not to go to places than to go,” the designer told the audience after the show.
